7 Questions you Should Ask Before Accepting the Job

Have you ever been so excited about a job offer that you accepted and signed the contract without knowing about the key unwritten terms of your new role? Issues such as expected working hours and healthcare may not be specified and can make a huge difference to your quality of life. Don’t worry, this happens a lot! So you prematurely signed the contract, what now?

When you received the offer, you were probably not calm and thinking practically. You signed the offer letter on the same day and sent it back without thinking clearly; that’s ok, now you officially have a job- that’s great!

If you are currently in the situation of accepting an offer too hastily, you can cover some of the basic issues (such as working hours or the dress code) with the person who interviewed you, or you can email the HR department before you arrive for your first day at work. Usually you will be given a point of contact, exactly for this reason! If more important matters such as healthcare plans are outstanding, it’s possibly better to wait to speak to someone face-to-face.

It is important to make career related decisions when you are calm and have time to think through the consequences of accepting or rejecting the offer. Bear in mind that every time we step into a new situation, we are learners all over again. While it’s not a bad thing to be a learner, it may also be bewildering and can you easily feel inexperienced. Don’t be so hard on yourself, and if you get into an unfavourable situation with a new potential employer, just remember that you can always apply for a different position in another company!

Learn from your mistakes and remember to ask some of these questions, before signing the offer letter:

  1. Is there a benefit/bonus programme in addition to the basic salary?
  2. What working hours are expected of me and is there flexibility with the start time?
  3. What is the healthcare plan like?
  4. Is overtime acknowledged or paid?
  5. How will my performance be evaluated?
  6. How does this position help the company hit its goals?
  7. Is there an office dress code?
